Gulf Coast Shutter now sells and installs Solar Gard solar and safety window films.
When considering home improvement changes that have a big impact, start with your windows. Solar heat enters through your windows and causes heat to build up inside your home. This makes your air conditioning and cooling costs go up, but today's technology makes improving your existing windows a cost-effective way to lower your energy costs. Solar Gard solar control window film can help you reduce your energy use at home by up to 30% while improving comfort and maintaining your home's appearance. The solar window films filter visible light and block more than 99% of the harmful untraviolet (UV) light associated with premature aging and skin cancer. With an SPF of 285+, window film can also protect furnishings, carpets and more from fading and damage due to UV exposure.
Solar Gard offers Armorcoat safety and security film with or without solar control properties. Armorcoat is designed to keep dangerous shards of glass together on impact, when glass is broken as a result of an accident, attempted burglary, storm or earthquake. Please note that this is not an approved method of hurricane protection.

The 2011 Atlantic hurricane season became the third busiest since records began in 1851. There were 19 tropical storms.
Of the 19 storms, seven became hurricanes of which 3 were major hurricanes.
Hurricane Irene's landfall along the U.S. East Coast was the most significant hurricane to strike the Northeast since Hurricane Bob in 1991.

GCS just installed Executive Phantom Screens in a home in Bluewater Bay, Niceville. These low profile retractable screens are shown in Rideau Brown for a double door, but they come in a variety of colors and sizes. Phantom retractable door screens provide insect protection and solar shading without blocking your views.
When planning and preparing your home for the next hurricane season, don't forget your garage doors. The Florida Alliance for Safe Homes (FLASH) says that "...about 80% of residential hurricane wind damage starts with wind entry through the garage door." Garage doors are one of the weakest points of your home against hurricane force winds because they cover large openings and they are usually located at the corner of a home, the weakest point against high wind pressure. Winds enter the home and blow off the roof resulting in major damage or complete destruction of the home. The old wives tale of backing your car up against the interior of the door is not a valid option because it does nothing to protect against the outward suction forces within the home.
GCS also does business as Overhead Door Co. of NW Florida. Here are some garage door security tips from Overhead Door Company:
•While on vacation or away from home for extended periods of time, unplug the garage door opener unit or use a vacation lock on the wall console switch, which is an optional accessory on Overhead Door® garage door openers.
•Consider purchasing a garage door opener with ...rolling code technology, which changes the access codes each time the transmitter is used to prevent code grabbing. Overhead Door’s CodeDodger® has been incorporated as a standard feature into our full line of openers since 1995.
•Wireless keypads, which activate the garage door opener with a personal identification number (PIN), are available for Overhead Door® garage door openers. This allows family members to open the door without the use of a key or remote. Never disclose the PIN or leave it written down.
•Never leave the remote control in the car or with a parking attendant. It should be treated like a house key.
•Always lock the door from the garage to the inside of your home for greater safety and security.
•Check to make sure your garage door is closed when you lock your entry doors at night.
